The oyster farming industry, being ancient but low-tech, is facing many challenges under global warming, including economic loss due to frequent and strong typhoons, quality instability due to overcrowding of oysters on the rafts, and lack of new blood into the industry. MSH aims at solving these problems and revitalised the oyster industry to become more profitable and sustainable.
MSH consists of three systems to provide an all-in-one sustainable solution:
- Typhon Resistant System: during typhoons, the lower layer of the ocean, saying 10 meters in depth, receives 1000 times less wave action than that at the water surface, providing a safe zone for the oyster rafts. By controlling the buoyancy of the buoys, the raft can sink into the sea to avoid direct contact with typhoons.
- Transportation System: Oysters at the middle of the raft often have the least amount of food available. This system allows the oysters to be rotated along a track automatically and regularly, so all the oysters on the raft have enough access to food by filter-feeding to maintain a consistent quality. In addition, loading and unloading the oysters from a single standing point will be made possible, hence reduce the investment on manpower.
- Off-field Monitor and Control System: MSH utilizes the remote sensing techniques and online database to automate the operation of oyster industry. The system will collect the data of typhoon to determine the time of sinking and floating of MSH. The system also collects the data of water quality, tide, and algae bloom etc. to contribute to the big-data of aquaculture, hence provide more scientific feedback to facilitate the oyster cultivation.
MSH will transform the 700 years old intangible cultural heritage to a modernised industry of economic, social and environmental sustainability.
