SMART Orthopaedic Clinic is an AI-enabled platform designed to support clinicians in knee osteoarthritis assessment, patient triage, and treatment-effectiveness evaluation. “SMART” stands for Streamlined Musculoskeletal Assessment, Risk-prediction, and Triage.

The platform addresses a major bottleneck in Hong Kong: long waiting times for knee replacement surgery and the limited precision of clinical grading, which may not provide sufficient information for early risk identification, referral planning, or long-term disease monitoring. To support clinical decision-making, SMART Orthopaedic Clinic combines AI analysis of knee X-rays, patient movement, and clinical information to generate the SMART Knee Index, estimate future progression risk, and provide clear visual reports for clinician review.

The platform includes two core products. The SMART Triage System assists hospitals in identifying patients who may require closer specialist review, supporting referral prioritisation, and guiding lower-risk patients toward appropriate conservative or community-based care pathways. The SMART Evaluation Module provides objective measures to help pharmaceutical, rehabilitation, and medical-device companies assess treatment response in clinical studies.

Built on large international datasets and supported by clinical collaborations, publications, patents, and prototype validation, the system will pursue regulatory approval, hospital pilot studies, and scalable licensing, starting in Hong Kong before expanding to the Greater Bay Area and Greater China.
