Dare To Change
YDC Best Social Care Award – Apeirocycle
Apeirocycle is researching how to bioengineer bacteria that digest plastics to achieve a breakthrough in plastic upcycling. Organisms that can eat plastics and polymers that can be disassembled to form fundamental structures illuminate possibilities to produce plastics that are not derived from fossil fuels. The promise of this technology can help realise a sustainable circular economy for plastics with infinite potential for recycling and upcycling.
Conventional recycling procedures for plastics inevitably result in constant degradation in material quality, severely limiting their reusability and further fuelling the continued production of new plastic. To this end, Apeirocycle offers a glimpse of a sustainable solution to the problem of plastic waste by promoting the recycling and upcycling of existing material. This would not only reduce the burden on the environment, but could also serve as a driver for further economic growth by bringing down plastic manufacturing costs and helping decrease demand for new materials.
